Polaris RANGER RZR 4 Robby Gordon Edition
January 14th, 2010 After announcing its relationship with racing legend Robby Gordon nine months ago, Polaris has a brand new vehicle to show for it – the Ranger RZR 4. According to Polaris, Sport side-by-side enthusiasts looking to carry multiple passengers had no options. That is no longer the case as the Ranger RZR 4 is the industry’s first four-seat Sport side-by-side.
“Polaris saw a market for a multi-passenger Sport vehicle at a significantly lower price than an expensive Sand Car or Rail,” says Eric Nault, product manager for Ranger RZR 4. “The Ranger RZR 4 fills that need for a Sport side-by-side experience for multiple passengers.”
Much about the RZR 4 has been taken from the Ranger RZR family. It’s powered by an 800cc high output Twin EFI engine and Polaris claims it has a class-leading power-to-weight ratio and strong acceleration. It features a 60-inch width coupled with the Ranger RZR’s patented design that places the engine behind the back seat for the lowest center of gravity. According to Polaris, this makes the RZR 4 more agile than most competitive two-seat side-by-sides. At 1,255 lbs, it’s also lighter than many two-passenger vehicles.
To help with handling, the RZR 4 is outfitted with premium suspension which includes new Fox Podium X 2.0 piggyback reservoir shocks and chromoly front upper A-arms. This provides a plush 12 inches of suspension travel and 12 inches of ground clearance. Polaris says the rear anti-sway bar and dual rate springs keeps the chassis flat through corners and the rolled independent rear suspension helps provide a smooth ride.
Polaris-Ranger-RZR-4To tackle tough terrain, the RZR 4’s suspension is coupled with Polaris’ true all-wheel drive (AWD) system that automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction and reverts back to 2WD automatically when AWD is no longer needed. In creating the four-seat RZR 4, Polaris paid particular attention to ergonomics. For the driver, the RZR 4 features class-leading tilt steering offering 10 inches of range and a heel pocket for improved throttle response and control. The front passenger will enjoy Polaris’ familiar adjustable front passenger handrail. Rear passengers, according to Polaris, enjoy ample headroom and an exclusive rear passenger handrail. Similar to the front passengers, rear passengers also have a 12-volt plug in and two cup holders.
All four bucket seats are interchangeable and offer 4 inches of front-to-rear adjustability making it easy to switch drivers. For safety, the RZR 4 has four side protective nets. The Ranger RZR 4 also features graphics from Robby Gordon’s TORC truck he raced at Crandon, Wis., as well as the No. 7 NSCS Toyota Camry he raced during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Labor Day Classic 500. The black, blue and white theme sports the Robby Gordon Off-Road logo on the front side panels with race-inspired graphics, cut-and-sew seats and Maxxis Big Horn tires with Black Bruiser rims.
“At Robby Gordon Off-Road, we build the highest performance, most elite off-road vehicles in the world,” says Robby Gordon. “I hope Polaris customers like the new Ranger RZR 4 Robby Gordon Edition as much as we do.”
The Ranger RZR 4 will be available at Polaris dealerships in January, with a MSRP of $14,999 (US) and $17,999 (CAN). A full line of PURE Polaris accessories, including roofs, cabs, bumpers, brushguards, windshields and Lock & Ride products also will be available, including many of the existing Ranger RZR and RZR S accessories that fit the Ranger RZR 4.

Dust-up Stirs Over Off-Road Vehicle
By Mike Lee
Thousands of off-roaders kicked off the high season last weekend with campouts and spinouts at Glamis, Ocotillo Wells and other desert hot spots.
Many rolled in a relatively new and inexpensive kind of machine – a cross between a golf cart and a dune buggy known as a recreational off-highway vehicle. More than 416,000 ROVs crisscross terrain from San Diego County to Maine, sometimes at more than 60 mph. Their numbers are swelling as recession-conscious hobbyists buy them instead of more expensive sand cars.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission says the ROVs were connected to at least 116 deaths in the past six years and are dangerous enough to warrant safety regulations. Last month, the agency said rules proposed by the off-road industry aren’t adequate and started creating its own.
Some off-roaders say the regulatory push is an intrusion into their private affairs and a sign of government paternalism. At least a few think the crackdown is part of a broader attempt to squeeze off-roaders into smaller parts of the backcountry.
“Off-roading is a dangerous sport. Period. So is hunting and surfing,” said Jay Langley, who works at Off Road Warehouse in San Diego. “There is no way that you can put enough safety features on one of these vehicles to make them safe.”
The commission hasn’t proposed specific rules, but agency documents highlight concerns about stability, “undesirable” steering characteristics and “inadequate” protection for occupants of ROVs, also called UTVs or side-by-sides.
Manufacturers define ROVs as off-road vehicles with engine displacements up to 1,000 cubic centimeters that are designed to travel on four or more non-highway tires. They typically come with a steering wheel, bucket seats, seat belts and roll bars and cost $10,000 to $15,000. Their cousins – all-terrain vehicles – have straddle seats, handlebars and no protective cage.
Ranchers and farmers were among the earliest ROV users in the late 1990s, but the machines’ popularity took off when people started using them for hunting, racing and other recreation.
Langley and many other off- roaders say the main problem with ROVs is people “doing stupid stuff,” such as letting children drive unsupervised and going too fast for the terrain.
Daniel Rosenzweig at Magnum Offroad in Vista, which specializes in safety retrofits, said stock ROVs can exceed 30 mph but can be modified to go faster.
“You figure 65 mph with that wheelbase is a recipe for disaster,” he said. “People get in these things, see that they have got a roll cage and think they’re safe and they go nuts.”
Magnum Offroad adds doors, widens wheelbases and upgrades roll bars on ROVs. Typical customers are fathers who want a relatively inexpensive way to teach their children about off- roading.
“Because of their compact size, they are able to go a lot more places” than dune buggies, Rosenzweig said. “They are able to access a lot more territory likes nooks and crannies in the rocks and wooded trails.”
ROVs are so new that no helmet laws, minimum age requirements or seat belt mandates apply in California, said Phil Jenkins, cq chief of the off-highway vehicles division for the state parks department. In contrast, anyone riding an ATV on public lands in California is legally required to wear a helmet.
Jenkins said state officials are talking about whether ROV rules are needed.
The Irvine-based Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association is developing voluntary safety standards and said the Consumer Product Safety Commission is jumping the gun with its move to develop rules.
“We are confident that through continued discussion and information sharing, an appropriate standard that reflects the input from all parties can be developed” through the industry process, it said.
At the Consumer Federation of America, senior counsel Rachel Weintraub cq applauded the commission. “The industry has gone where they want to go, which is not far enough,” she said.
Weintraub said ROV manufacturers should have anticipated problems after ATVs sparked safety concerns two decades ago with unstable three-wheeled models. She said it’s not fair to simply blame ROV users.
“The best way to prevent injuries is to look at the product and say, `What we can we do differently, knowing that people operate them in these ways, to diminish potential hazards?’ ” she said.
A Consumer Product Safety Commission spokeswoman said the industry’s proposed voluntary standards don’t fully address stability, handling and occupant retention.
Similar concerns prompted the agency to negotiate a recall with Yamaha in March after two Rhino models were linked to 46 deaths. More than two-thirds of cases involved rollovers and unbelted occupants, and the commission said many appeared to occur during low-speed turns on level ground.
“While we work on new safety rules for ROVs, I urge all riders and passengers to strap on a helmet, use the seat belt, know the terrain and never allow anyone under 16 to drive these vehicles,” said Inez Tenenbaum, chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Sue Cox, director of trauma services at Rady Children’s Hospital, said her unit has dealt with 254 injuries in the past three years related to all kinds of off- road vehicles.
“What really is concerning to me is that out of this number of 254, 47 kids were under 10 years old,” Cox said. “That is really a sobering statistic. What are parents thinking?”
Many off-road enthusiasts say the answer is responsible parents and drivers, not federal mandates.
“I think it’s going to end up just ruining vehicles that are perfectly safe if you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines,” said Jon Crowley, publisher of UTVGuide.net. “When does the government get involved with something and make it better?”

Polaris Defense Awarded $2.4 million Contract by National Guard Bureau for RANGER 800 CREW Off-Road Vehicles
Minneapolis, Oct. 14, 2009 – Polaris Defense today announced an award for the purchase of Polaris RANGER 800 CREW Side-by-Sides by the National Guard Bureau, the federal organization that oversees equipment purchases for the National Guard. The $2.4 million purchase of the Side-by-Sides will support the critical role the Army National Guard has to conduct missions abroad and at home including disaster relief.
“The National Guard’s state-side mission to protect the homeland and respond to disasters fits Polaris vehicles extremely well,” said Mark McCormick, managing director of Polaris Defense. “Our all wheel drive, multi-passenger, off-road vehicles provide a cost-effective capability well-suited for the demands of the National Guard. This is a big win for Polaris and our defense business. As an American company, we are committed to providing quality vehicles to the U.S. Military and this contract is a great example of our commitment to that goal.”
“Polaris Defense won the contract in a full and open competition conducted by the National Guard Bureau. The 2010 RANGER 800 CREW features an exclusive adjustable Dual A-Arm front suspension in addition to its legendary smooth independent rear suspension. The new suspension allows for superior ground clearance for a vehicle of this type and a great ride when carrying heavier loads and using accessories for work applications. The RANGER CREW also offers anti-kickback steering, high payload and towing, ease of attaching accessories and capability to carry six people.
Polaris 2010 continues where model year 2009 left off with another year of exciting and
innovative Off-Road offerings.
Model year 2009 brought the most-significant product launch in Polaris RANGER history with the introduction of the next generation RANGER utility vehicles that worked EVEN harder and rode EVEN smoother. For 2010, the line is more powerful with the addition of the 500 H.O engine for the RANGER 4x4 (now called RANGER 500 H.O.) and 800 EFI engine for the RANGER 800 XP, RANGER 800 HD, RANGER 800 CREW and RANGER 800 6x6. The new RANGER 800 XP also will have a power steering model available for the 2010 model year.
Polaris also expanded the new RANGER XP chassis, upgraded ergonomics and dual A-Arm front suspension to all full-size RANGER vehicles, including the six-passenger RANGER 800 CREW and RANGER 800 6x6. As part of the upgrades, the RANGER 800 CREW gets increased front and rear leg room by two inches, and RANGER 800 6x6 is updated with a new harder-working, truck-like job box between the cargo box and cab, one-ton total payload, and a fully-independent front, middle and rear suspension.
New additions to the RANGER family include the hardest working, smoothest riding Midsize RANGER 400 and the clean and quiet, electric RANGER EV. These two-passenger units share many of the features of their full-sized counterparts: On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive with VersaTrac, Independent Rear Suspension, heavy-duty front end protection, high ground clearance, and the longest suspension travel in their classes. The RANGER 400 fits in the bed of a pickup truck and offers a 455cc high output carbureted engine with 29 horsepower, 40 mph top speed, 500 lbs of cargo capacity, 1,000 lbs payload and 1,250 lbs. of towing, making it a true “Hardest Working, Smoothest Riding” RANGER, at the value price of $7,999.
Sharing the same Midsize chassis as the RANGER 400, is the all-new RANGER EV Electric Side-by-Side. The RANGER EV is the smoothest riding electric vehicle on the market with the longest travel suspension in its class, eight inches front and nine inches rear; high ground clearance at 10 inches; and an Independent Rear Suspension for smooth travel in the roughest terrain. Built for clean and quiet operation, the RANGER EV has a 30 horsepower electric motor with the longest range (35-45 miles) due to its largest 11.5 kilowatt battery pack, 25 mph top speed and two hours of riding time between charges. Hardest working features include a 500 lb Lock & Ride cargo box, 1,250 lb. towing and 1,000 lb. total payload.
Along with offering a full line of RANGER utility vehicles to fit every customer’s needs, Polaris also has the ultimate line up for the recreational rider. Last model year, Polaris introduced the RANGER RZR S, the ultimate, pure-sport Side-by-Side built for the desert, dunes and open spaces to complement the 50-inch, trail-capable RANGER RZR. For 2010, RANGER RZR reaches a new top speed of 60 and both the RANGER RZR and RANGER RZR S feature a ROPS certified cab.
“Polaris continues to stay on the gas with new products and enhancements to our existing ATV line,” said Matt Homan, vice president and general manager for Polaris Off-Road Vehicles. “With products such as Touring models featuring the exclusive comfort ride seat suspension, more power for the RANGER utility line, a new Midsize RANGER and the introduction of Polaris’ first electric vehicle, RANGER EV, our 2010 product line up offers innovation, power and value for the most complete off-road vehicle offering in the industry.”
ITP Tundra Cross UTV / ATV Snow and Ice Tire
Leave it to ITP to deliver the ATV/UTV industry’s first production snow and ice tire! The all-new TundraCross features 96 carbide-tipped steel case studs that are strategically placed for maximum performance on ice and snow. The TundraCross is based on ITP’s highly successful TerraCross R/T XD design, and features fully sipped (thinly cut) lugs, which result in more traction-grabbing edges and maximum traction in loose, slippery conditions.
Its tough 6-ply bias construction is light in weight and offers excellent flotation to keep the tire “on top” of the snow. A proven Rim Guard keeps snow and ice out of the bead area and protects the wheel lip. The TundraCross debuts in two sizes: 25×9-12 (P/N 560544) and 25×10-12 (P/N 560545).
According to Minnesota-based Rox Speed FX, who assisted in the development of this tire, “These carbon studs have no mercy on whatever surface they come in contact with, not only clawing their way through ice and snow but over frozen logs and dirt. With the TundraCross mounted we now welcome the onset of winter and all its changes and challenges. The TundraCross adds one more season of capability to any utility/4×4 ATV or side-by-side UTV, helping to put the ‘all’ in all-terrain.”

Yamaha Continues to Support Safe, Responsible OHV Access Efforts Nationwide
Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., through its successful OHV Access Initiative, continues to support landmark programs directed by the country’s most prominent outdoor recreation organizations which are leading national efforts to promote safe, responsible riding and sustainable, open riding areas nationwide.
A total of more than $100,000 in funds are being contributed through separate Yamaha OHV GRANTs to Tread Lightly!, the Blue Ribbon Coalition, the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) and the National OHV Conservation Council (NOHVCC).
“The OHV Access Initiative has made fantastic strides from the grassroots perspective creating and maintaining responsible riding opportunities for local OHV communities,” said Mike Martinez, Yamaha’s general manager of ATV and Side-by-Side Operations. “Yamaha’s ability to also support these national projects, combined with our on-the-ground work through dealers and regional staff, continue to elevate the effectiveness of the OHV Access Initiative. ITP T-9 Pro Mod Spun Aluminum UTV/ATV Wheel
ITP’s popular, proven T-9 series of spun aluminum wheels has been expanded with the introduction of the all-new Pro Mod line. Highlights of the ITP T-9 Pro Mod include a head-turning polished finish, a double-rolled lip for excellent durability and ease of tire mounting, rugged yet lightweight .190 wall construction and the rigorous QS 9000 quality certification.
What sets the Pro Mod apart from the rest of the T-9 line is its classic off-road modular style and an angled outer wheel face. This unique design adds considerable strength to the wheel center without a weight penalty. In fact, the T-9 Pro Mod is significantly lighter than its competition, reducing unsprung weight and rotating mass for noticeable performance gains.
This manufacturing makes the T-9 Pro Mod ideal for use on heavier ATVs and UTVs, applications where spun aluminum wheels were formerly inappropriate. The T-9 Pro Mod is available in a wide variety of bolt patterns for many popular 4×4 ATVs as well as side-by-side UTVs such as the Yamaha Rhino, Kawasaki’s Teryx and Mule, and the Polaris Ranger and RZR. The T-9 Pro Mod is available in 12×7 and 14×7 sizing with 4+3 offsets.

“Polaris would like to thank ‘Field & Stream’ for naming the RANGER HD as the ‘Best of the Best,’” said Jan Rintamaki, marketing director of the Off-Road Division for Polaris. “It’s an honor to have the world’s leading outdoor magazine recognize the RANGER HD as a premier product for its readership.”

For easier steering during heavy-duty work applications, RANGER HD also features power steering with exclusive Variable Assist. RANGER HD’s power steering allows for one-finger steering at low speeds and eliminates feedback at high speeds so the operator can work longer and enjoy the ride. The system is perfect for plowing as well as the new BOSS® Lift & Carry System that attaches to the front of the RANGER HD and can lift and carry up to 500 lbs.

ITP has combined all of the best technology and performance of the proven C-Series Type 7 one-piece aluminum wheel with all the benefits of a beadlock design to create the new T7 Beadlock.
The T7 Beadlock uses a billet outer ring that clamps the tire to the wheel, greatly reducing the risk of the tire debeading from the wheel when using lower tire pressures or when the tire is subjected to heavy side loads. As an added benefit, this ring also strengthens a wheel that’s already known for its rugged durability.
Manufactured through ITP’s exclusive Advancecast process, the T7 Beadlock meets rigorous QS 9000 quality specifications and arrives with a stunning polished or black finish in 12×7 and 14×7 sizes for most of today’s popular sport-utility ATVs and side-by-side UTVs.
The T7 Beadlock comes standard with a polished ring, but enthusiasts interested in giving their machine a custom look will be happy to know that the T7 Beadlock’s ring is also available in black, blue or red powdercoat finishes!

Kawasaki Teryx™ Recreation Utility Vehicle Selected In
SOCOM Tactical Vehicle Competition
More Than 1,600 Teryx RUVs Included in $28.3 Million Order
The United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has been searching for a tough, agile, tactical vehicle. From run of the mill utility vehicles all the way up to mega-dollar custom fabricated equipment, there was no shortage of contenders for the job. Following extensive research and numerous evaluation sessions, they decided to go with Kawasaki’s 2009 Teryx™ Recreation Utility Vehicle (RUV).
After providing units to the military in June of 2008, Shannon Tracy, owner of UV Country Kawasaki a Veteran woman owned small business located in Houston, Tex., immediately recognized the Teryx’s excellent chance of winning any military competition where toughness, light weight, speed and agility were a factor.
In January, she replied to a new SOCOM bid request, with a proposal for UV Country to provide a large quantity of Kawasaki Teryx RUVs over a multi-year period.
Tracy’s efforts paid off, quite handsomely. After the final round of evaluations, SOCOM chose the 2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4×4 RUV, awarding the contract, worth up to $28,390,453 to UV Country. UV Country is now scheduled to deliver up to 1,625 units on a five year indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract.
“We’ve fulfilled several smaller GSA and Texas state contracts in the past, but this new Special Forces project is our largest contract by far.” says Tracy. “It provides a great boost to our business, lends extra credibility to the Teryx and assists all Kawasaki dealers by capitalizing on its outstanding performance. If it’s good enough for the SOCOM environment, then it must be capable of handling whatever American hunters and outdoor enthusiasts can throw at it. This is a real win-win situation for everyone,” concluded Tracy.
Powered by a fuel-injected 750cc V-twin engine, Kawasaki’s popular Teryx 750 FI 4×4 RUV offers side-by-side seating for two adults, a roll over protective structure (ROPS), front discs and a special sealed rear brake, four wheel independent suspension, a tilting cargo bed with 500 pounds of carrying capacity and the ability to tow up to 1,300 pounds.

The recreational sport vehicle world will never be the same again. A new breed has evolved with a mix of working UTV traits and sportier ATV genes — the Kawasaki Teryx„¢ 750 4×4. This new full-sized RSV is the first to have V-twin power and combines its Kawasaki heritage of efficient CVT and integrated occupant protection with superior ground clearance, cargo capacity, and sport handling to become the top performing RSV on the market. The Teryx 750 4×4 is all about recreation, yet it retains enough of its working heritage to offer amazing versatility and handy features for tackling everyday tasks.
At the core of the Teryx 750 4×4 is its strong and proven 749cc 90-degree V-twin engine, the same engine that gives the Brute Force® 750 4×4 its distinguished high performance. The mid-chassis mounted engine gives the Teryx 750 4×4 a displacement and V-twin torque advantage over its contemporaries and delivers the performance that RSV customers have been seeking. Mated to the engine is Kawasaki’s superb constant velocity automatic transmission (CVT), which transfers the power from the big V-twin to the wheels smoothly and quickly. The output of the duo provides a true sport performance, yet in a controlled manner that allows the driver to harness the full potential of the Teryx 750 4×4.
Naturally, big power demands a chassis to compliment it and once again the Teryx delivers with an ideal width body — narrow enough to be useful and able to navigate the trail but wide enough to be stable and handle the healthy output from the V-twin. Its large-diameter, thin-walled tubular frame offers the necessary rigidity without performance draining weight, and all in an arrangement spacious enough to fit two adults comfortably.
The Teryx 750 4×4 shares the long A-arm and narrow frame concept of its sport brethren to give it the maximum travel while minimizing wheel camber change. Featuring adjustable Kayaba suspension with gas-charged shocks, the sport-performance focused suspension of the Teryx 750 4×4 is designed to remain controlled even at top speed.
When the terrain requires it, the driver can activate 4WD with a simple servo-control switch. Further traction management is achieved via an ATV-style front differential control activated with a hand lever that functions like a rear hand brake and lets the driver select how much the wheels are locked together. The rear wheels stay locked and always turn together — much like a sport ATV — allowing the Teryx to slide around corners easier in a drift style.
It continues its dominance in the field with new 26-inch Maxxis tires developed specifically for the Teryx 750 4×4 that enable superb forward and sliding traction. The tall tires offer good rough terrain handling and contribute to its class leading ground clearance and ability to overcome obstacles.
A fast RSV would not be good without having equally capable stopping power and Teryx 750 4×4 delivers. It employs a combination of dual 200mm discs up front and a sealed wet brake in the rear. The front brakes are tucked into the wheels for protection from debris and their 27mm twin-piston calipers are rigid-mounted for optimum feel and control. The advantage of the sealed rear brake is most apparent when it’s able to keep working even in the wettest or muddiest of environments.
Featuring bucket seats and retractable three-point seat belts that keep the driver and passenger strapped in snugly, the Teryx 750 4×4 also has plenty of shoulder and leg room to provide a comfortable ride. It also has foot guards designed into the steel floor boards and body along with a padded steering wheel that is positioned low for better control.
However, the Teryx 750 4×4 isn’t all play and no work. It is equipped with a 500-pound capacity cargo bed that is ideal for recreational users, yet versatile enough for work and hauling with tie down hooks in all four corners and comes with cargo net to keep the goods secure. The Teryx 750 4×4 can also pull the load with its 1300-pound towing capacity.
Rider comfort and conveniences increase even more on the Teryx 750 4×4 LE, with the addition of a digital meter with dual trip meters, clock and hour-meter, half-windshield, hard top and dual retractable cup holders. The LE also features a tilting cargo bed with gas assist, which gives the tilting bed a boost.
When the sun drops the fun or work doesn’t have to stop with the dual 40W headlights showing the way and dual rear taillights letting it be seen. An eight gallon fuel tank allows it to operate longer and cover more distance so the journey isn’t cut short either.
The Teryx 750 4×4 is built tough with scratch resistant Thermo-Plastic Olefin (TPO) bodywork and steel skid plates underneath to shield the engine from the ride stopping obstacles.
A large selection of authentic Kawasaki Accessories are available for the 2008 Teryx 750 4×4 are available through Kawasaki dealers. As with all off-highway vehicle recreation, Kawasaki encourages RSV drivers to drive responsibly and to respect the environment.
