Polaris Ranger RZR UTV News

First UTV to ever race Pikes Peak!

Doug Siddens, in his 2009 Polaris RZR-S, is the first person ever to drive a UTV at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb!

On June 27th, 2010, Doug was the only UTV in the Powersports Exhibition class. Not only did he finish first in his class, but he also beat out over 40% of the 152 competitors on race day with his time of 14:03.

Just reaching the top of this monumental mountain is a mechanical feat within itself. To do it in the time he did is more than respectable. There were also some other variables on race day that make this run even that much more notable. For one, it was snowing about the last three miles of the climb, and two, Doug has no professional racing experience. Not bad for a small town guy with no factory backing and an entire Powersport resting on his shoulders!

Polaris RANGER RZR 4 Robby Gordon Edition

January 14th, 2010 After announcing its relationship with racing legend Robby Gordon nine months ago, Polaris has a brand new vehicle to show for it – the Ranger RZR 4. According to Polaris, Sport side-by-side enthusiasts looking to carry multiple passengers had no options. That is no longer the case as the Ranger RZR 4 is the industry’s first four-seat Sport side-by-side.

“Polaris saw a market for a multi-passenger Sport vehicle at a significantly lower price than an expensive Sand Car or Rail,” says Eric Nault, product manager for Ranger RZR 4. “The Ranger RZR 4 fills that need for a Sport side-by-side experience for multiple passengers.”

Much about the RZR 4 has been taken from the Ranger RZR family. It’s powered by an 800cc high output Twin EFI engine and Polaris claims it has a class-leading power-to-weight ratio and strong acceleration. It features a 60-inch width coupled with the Ranger RZR’s patented design that places the engine behind the back seat for the lowest center of gravity. According to Polaris, this makes the RZR 4 more agile than most competitive two-seat side-by-sides. At 1,255 lbs, it’s also lighter than many two-passenger vehicles.

To help with handling, the RZR 4 is outfitted with premium suspension which includes new Fox Podium X 2.0 piggyback reservoir shocks and chromoly front upper A-arms. This provides a plush 12 inches of suspension travel and 12 inches of ground clearance. Polaris says the rear anti-sway bar and dual rate springs keeps the chassis flat through corners and the rolled independent rear suspension helps provide a smooth ride.

Polaris-Ranger-RZR-4To tackle tough terrain, the RZR 4’s suspension is coupled with Polaris’ true all-wheel drive (AWD) system that automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction and reverts back to 2WD automatically when AWD is no longer needed. In creating the four-seat RZR 4, Polaris paid particular attention to ergonomics. For the driver, the RZR 4 features class-leading tilt steering offering 10 inches of range and a heel pocket for improved throttle response and control. The front passenger will enjoy Polaris’ familiar adjustable front passenger handrail. Rear passengers, according to Polaris, enjoy ample headroom and an exclusive rear passenger handrail. Similar to the front passengers, rear passengers also have a 12-volt plug in and two cup holders.

All four bucket seats are interchangeable and offer 4 inches of front-to-rear adjustability making it easy to switch drivers. For safety, the RZR 4 has four side protective nets. The Ranger RZR 4 also features graphics from Robby Gordon’s TORC truck he raced at Crandon, Wis., as well as the No. 7 NSCS Toyota Camry he raced during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Labor Day Classic 500. The black, blue and white theme sports the Robby Gordon Off-Road logo on the front side panels with race-inspired graphics, cut-and-sew seats and Maxxis Big Horn tires with Black Bruiser rims.

“At Robby Gordon Off-Road, we build the highest performance, most elite off-road vehicles in the world,” says Robby Gordon. “I hope Polaris customers like the new Ranger RZR 4 Robby Gordon Edition as much as we do.”

The Ranger RZR 4 will be available at Polaris dealerships in January, with a MSRP of $14,999 (US) and $17,999 (CAN). A full line of PURE Polaris accessories, including roofs, cabs, bumpers, brushguards, windshields and Lock & Ride products also will be available, including many of the existing Ranger RZR and RZR S accessories that fit the Ranger RZR 4.

Polaris Defense Awarded $2.4 million Contract by National Guard Bureau for RANGER 800 CREW Off-Road Vehicles

Minneapolis, Oct. 14, 2009 – Polaris Defense today announced an award for the purchase of Polaris RANGER 800 CREW Side-by-Sides by the National Guard Bureau, the federal organization that oversees equipment purchases for the National Guard. The $2.4 million purchase of the Side-by-Sides will support the critical role the Army National Guard has to conduct missions abroad and at home including disaster relief. “The National Guard’s state-side mission to protect the homeland and respond to disasters fits Polaris vehicles extremely well,” said Mark McCormick, managing director of Polaris Defense. “Our all wheel drive, multi-passenger, off-road vehicles provide a cost-effective capability well-suited for the demands of the National Guard. This is a big win for Polaris and our defense business. As an American company, we are committed to providing quality vehicles to the U.S. Military and this contract is a great example of our commitment to that goal.” “Polaris Defense won the contract in a full and open competition conducted by the National Guard Bureau. The 2010 RANGER 800 CREW features an exclusive adjustable Dual A-Arm front suspension in addition to its legendary smooth independent rear suspension. The new suspension allows for superior ground clearance for a vehicle of this type and a great ride when carrying heavier loads and using accessories for work applications. Polaris 2010 continues where model year 2009 left off with another year of exciting and
innovative Off-Road offerings.

Model year 2009 brought the most-significant product launch in Polaris RANGER history with the introduction of the next generation RANGER utility vehicles that worked EVEN harder and rode EVEN smoother. For 2010, the line is more powerful with the addition of the 500 H.O engine for the RANGER 4x4 (now called RANGER 500 H.O.) and 800 EFI engine for the RANGER 800 XP, RANGER 800 HD, RANGER 800 CREW and RANGER 800 6x6. The new RANGER 800 XP also will have a power steering model available for the 2010 model year.

Polaris also expanded the new RANGER XP chassis, upgraded ergonomics and dual A-Arm front suspension to all full-size RANGER vehicles, including the six-passenger RANGER 800 CREW and RANGER 800 6x6. As part of the upgrades, the RANGER 800 CREW gets increased front and rear leg room by two inches, and RANGER 800 6x6 is updated with a new harder-working, truck-like job box between the cargo box and cab, one-ton total payload, and a fully-independent front, middle and rear suspension.

New additions to the RANGER family include the hardest working, smoothest riding Midsize RANGER 400 and the clean and quiet, electric RANGER EV. These two-passenger units share many of the features of their full-sized counterparts: On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive with VersaTrac, Independent Rear Suspension, heavy-duty front end protection, high ground clearance, and the longest suspension travel in their classes. The RANGER 400 fits in the bed of a pickup truck and offers a 455cc high output carbureted engine with 29 horsepower, 40 mph top speed, 500 lbs of cargo capacity, 1,000 lbs payload and 1,250 lbs. of towing, making it a true “Hardest Working, Smoothest Riding” RANGER, at the value price of $7,999.

Sharing the same Midsize chassis as the RANGER 400, is the all-new RANGER EV Electric Side-by-Side. The RANGER EV is the smoothest riding electric vehicle on the market with the longest travel suspension in its class, eight inches front and nine inches rear; high ground clearance at 10 inches; and an Independent Rear Suspension for smooth travel in the roughest terrain. Built for clean and quiet operation, the RANGER EV has a 30 horsepower electric motor with the longest range (35-45 miles) due to its largest 11.5 kilowatt battery pack, 25 mph top speed and two hours of riding time between charges. Hardest working features include a 500 lb Lock & Ride cargo box, 1,250 lb. towing and 1,000 lb. total payload.

Along with offering a full line of RANGER utility vehicles to fit every customer’s needs, Polaris also has the ultimate line up for the recreational rider. Last model year, Polaris introduced the RANGER RZR S, the ultimate, pure-sport Side-by-Side built for the desert, dunes and open spaces to complement the 50-inch, trail-capable RANGER RZR. For 2010, RANGER RZR reaches a new top speed of 60 and both the RANGER RZR and RANGER RZR S feature a ROPS certified cab.

“Polaris continues to stay on the gas with new products and enhancements to our existing ATV line,” said Matt Homan, vice president and general manager for Polaris Off-Road Vehicles. “With products such as Touring models featuring the exclusive comfort ride seat suspension, more power for the RANGER utility line, a new Midsize RANGER and the introduction of Polaris’ first electric vehicle, RANGER EV, our 2010 product line up offers innovation, power and value for the most complete off-road vehicle offering in the industry.”

RANGER HD Named “Best of the Best” by “Field & Stream” Magazine

Minneapolis, Aug. 19, 2009 –Polaris Industries today announced the RANGER HD has been awarded “Best of the Best” by “Field & Stream” Magazine. “Field & Stream” also named the vehicle one of the “Best Off-Road Rides for 2009” in a previous issue.

“Polaris would like to thank ‘Field & Stream’ for naming the RANGER HD as the ‘Best of the Best,’” said Jan Rintamaki, marketing director of the Off-Road Division for Polaris. “It’s an honor to have the world’s leading outdoor magazine recognize the RANGER HD as a premier product for its readership.”

Built for ultra heavy-duty work applications, Polaris introduced the RANGERHD as part of its 2009 model year line-up. The vehicle has all the new RANGER features plus an exclusive Self-Leveling Suspension and Variable Assist Power Steering. The RANGER HD was introduced with Nivomat® shocks making it the first-ever Self-Leveling Suspension on a utility vehicle. When carrying heavy loads, the shocks automatically adjust the suspension resulting in the highest loaded ground clearance of any utility vehicle. Due to a lower spring rate, the Nivomats provide a smoother ride and the ability to go long distances at 50 MPH fully-loaded, making hauling loads quicker and easier.

For easier steering during heavy-duty work applications, RANGER HD also features power steering with exclusive Variable Assist. RANGER HD’s power steering allows for one-finger steering at low speeds and eliminates feedback at high speeds so the operator can work longer and enjoy the ride. The system is perfect for plowing as well as the new BOSS® Lift & Carry System that attaches to the front of the RANGER HD and can lift and carry up to 500 lbs.

Outdoor enthusiasts can see the RANGER HD in “Field & Stream’s” Gear of the Year, September, 2009 issue which is available on stands now.
